Why this petition matters

We need your signature to stop this cruelty.

Horses are flight animals, so from a humane perspective, the slaughter of horses is reprehensible. They are confined and can be injured in the transport to the sales yards and slaughterhouse - this is a terrifying experience for them. When transported these horses are without food or water, and when they are shipped overseas this means up to 40 hours from original feed lot, to quarantine location in Japan.

From an ethical perspective - horses helped build this country. They have served along side us in times of war. They are our friends, comforting us, playing with us or performing for us in the show ring, on the trail, in front of a wagon or cart. They trust us and we, in return for their service, pack them into trucks and ship them to slaughter - locally or to a foreign land where we have no laws to oversee their treatment or death.

And finally, from an environmental perspective shipping horses overseas is ludicrous. We are in severe climate crisis. We are using one of the world's largest airplanes to ship horses live to slaughter in a foreign country. Refueling in Alaska, not to water and feed the horses, but to fuel the plane due to the extreme weight of the cargo.

The Liberal government said at the last federal election they will end the live export of horses. Now is the time to raise your voice for the voiceless.

The above was based on a piece by Collen Walker - a tireless fighter for animals who are suffering.

Please bear in mind: any horse in Canada can be killed for meat - victims include foals, pregnant mares,  the pony that you had your first ride on and the old mare who lets every horse-crazy kid pat its head. They, along with the injured sports horses, ponies that children have outgrown, and gentle giants like Belgiums and Clydesdales, are all among those terrified animals being shipped off to slaughter in Canada and abroad.

The majority of Canadians do not believe that horses should be slaughtered (see 1 below) but our governments support the industry.  It is time to tell the Canadian government that we want this industry shut down

*** Please do not donate here - all $$$ donated here goes to this website not to saving horses ***

The horse slaughter industry brought in  "$31 million in 2018" (see 2 below). And 54,100 horses were slaughtered in 2016 (see 3 below).  Paola di Paolo's wrote an article  at https://equinewellnessmagazine.com/horse-slaughter-canada/ providing background on horse slaughter in Canada. And, according to di Paolo, the treatment of horses at feedlots, where they wait to be killed, often results in unnecessary suffering (see 4 below).
