Why this petition matters

We would like to approach you from a non-profit organization called Maui Off-Road Riders, established in Maui in order to help our kids, parents, and families to secure a designated place to ride altogether with kids, parents, and families, teach them safety, technique how to ride, meet with friends, share experience, have fun, and bring rest of the families and spend some quality time together. Socialize, possibly camp overnight, create friendship and recruit new members in order to build a strong base and community. Unlike many other sports in Maui, us, riders, we never received any funds, unfortunately not even support from Maui County or State.

We approached a DLNR Na Ala Hele division for help and even we have full support from Trails and Access department, it is apparently not enough to get our request in movement. We’re experiencing a lack of commitment, negativity or simply just not enough flexibility from people working in different positions when trying to get our request in motion.

We know there was a massive request supported by a huge petition signed by many island riders and families about ten years ago, but in the end, nothing has been accomplished. The open land which has been finally chosen has been given to the development company and single-family homes have been built. It is an irony, even there are thousands of acres of unused land in Maui and after so many years we have still no place to be.

Because we have been ignored so many times after so many approaches, most of the riders are riding illegally in many restricted areas, not safe for anyone, not good for the environment either. On top of that, no kids and families can be involved at all, so in the aspect of supporting local families and developing a strong community, we feel the County and State really are doing not a good job. An only a strong and healthy community can be the base of a successful society. Let us bring kids to moto sport again, prevent them from drugs and alcohol, keep them out of trouble.

We’re not asking for a gift. We have the manpower to do many things by ourselves, we can pay via fundraisers and we can participate and take care of maintenance by our members, with help from our families. We’re ready to take care of the place, develop and evolve. We just need a place to stay.

Receive a designated place where we can build designated place to ride altogether with kids, parents, and families, teach them safety, technique how to ride, meet with friends, share experience, have fun, and bring rest of the families and spend some quality time together. Socialize, possibly camp overnight, create friendship and recruit new members in order to build a strong base and community.
