Why this petition matters

Started by Patrick Doran

Football is a contact sport and it is therefore impossible to maintain social distancing while playing the game. Therefore to allow matches to be played again is in direct contradiction to the guidelines being issued by the Government.

Again, it appears there is one rule for the elite and another for the rest of us. We are not allowed to go to the park and play football because it is not safe to do so. If it is not safe for us how can it be safe for them or for the people who come in contact with them after each game?

My daughter, a single mother of two girls, aged 3 and 5, is not allowed to go back to her job as a hairdresser because she cannot maintain social distancing while cutting hair despite the fact that her clients do not kick her, jump on her or spit on the floor while they are having their hair coloured, blow dried or cut. How is it therefore more appropriate for professional football rather than hairdressing to be given the go ahead?

Bill Shankly once said “Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.” However, this is not true and COVID19 has hammered home just how delicate and precious life is. The decision to start playing football again is driven by massive egos and not by what is in the best interest of the General Public.

I trust you agree and will show your support by signing this petition. Thank you.
