PLEASE HELP US TO GET GURNELL LEISURE CENTRE REOPENED

Gurnell Leisure Centre has now been closed since March 2020 as Ealing Council decided not to reopen it when Covid-19 restrictions eased in the summer of 2021.

The key factor stated in their decision was that it was due to be demolished in early 2021 as part of their redevelopment plans.  However, the planning application (which included 6 tower blocks on protected land) was refused by the Ealing Planning Committee on 17th March 2021.

We are now left with no leisure centre or pool and no transparent plan of action from the council.

Gyms and leisure centres play a key role in helping people to be active and they will be crucial in our nation’s recovery from coronavirus (Covid-19) as well as wider health, wellbeing, and community benefits.

We call on the Mayor of London to take the following steps to bring our leisure centre and pool back into use: 

• Commit to funding the repair of the Leisure Centre and 50m pool or putting in place a clear process to secure funding.
• Commit to a target reopening date, with regular progress updates between now and that point.
• Commit to preserving the protected Metropolitan Open Land (MOL) on which the current leisure centre sits and not allowing inappropriate development of tower blocks on this site.
