Lower the smoking age in Maryland to 18
Lower the smoking age in Maryland to 18
Why this petition matters
Since the legal age of tobacco purchasing/consumption in Maryland has raised, it has left many of those who were previously of legal age (18-20) to suffer with a nicotine addiction that they can no longer satisfy.
So far this change in the legal age has been ineffective in stopping the flow of tobacco products to minors. There are still plenty of kids in high schools all over the state using vapes. It may be harder to obtain for minors than it was in past years but it's still proving ineffective. Though at the same time, this change in the law is preventing many people who should be able to legally purchase tobacco products without a means to do so.
There are already plenty of regulations in place that emphasize the dangers of smoking. Tobacco products already possess warnings on their packages, such as lung cancer warnings. It couldn't be any more obvious that these products are harmful to your health.
So instead of making the choice for citizens, once the age of 18 has been reached, citizens should be able to choose for themselves whether or not they want to smoke. If you're old enough to be drafted into the military, you're certainly old enough to smoke a cigarette.
