Why this petition matters

Started by Jack Pickering

In the past few weeks of June 2021, there has been an increase in LGBTQIA+ attacks across the country. As a community, the LGBTQIA+ have been fighting for basic human rights for decades. June is a month where the community can celebrate how far we have come yet our pride has been flooded with aggressive acts of hate. These attacks are leaving people severely injured and mentally scarred. In Liverpool, there have been 5 attacks in 1 week. All of which were homophobic hate crimes.

With the increase of attacks, I personally and other people I know in the community have seen no action by the government to put in place special funding to protect the LGBTQIA+ community in nightlife areas.

This is a petition for the British government and the Mayor of London to provide more funding to protect the LGBTQIA+ nightlife areas across the country, as the attacks are posted commonly happening to people coming home from a night out.

  • 4 in 5 anti-LGBTQIA+ hate crimes and incidents go unreported, with younger LGBTQIA+ people particularly reluctant to find protection.
  • 2 in 5 trans people have experienced a hate crime or incident because of their gender identity in the last 12 months.

LGBTQIA+ are more vulnerable at night especially when they're under the influence of alcohol. As anyone under the influence, people are less able to defend or escape such attacks.

Please share as much as you can, to anyone you can. This won't solve everything but it's a step forward.
