Name new Royal Navy frigate HMS Coventry
Name new Royal Navy frigate HMS Coventry
Why this petition matters
I am campaigning to persuade the Royal Navy to name one of five new unnamed frigates HMS Coventry. The name ‘Coventry’ has been associated with the Royal Navy since 1658 and six boats have previously borne the name of our great city up until the early part of the 21st century.
With the city about to enjoy national prominence as the UK City of Culture in 2021 the time is right to fully restore the link between our city and the Royal Navy. A new frigate named HMS Coventry would be a fitting and lasting legacy of our year as City of Culture and a tremendous honour for our city.
Such a prestigious honour would raise our profile at home and abroad giving us the ability to project ourselves as a modern, global outward looking city. It would doubtless be a source of tremendous civic pride for the people of Coventry and a fitting tribute to the contribution, and sacrifice, that Coventry has made to the Royal Navy over the centuries.
