Why this petition matters

This petition is part of an international campaign by Last Chance for Animals (LCA) and South Korean sister organization, Animal Liberation Wave (ALW).

A new dog slaughter ban has been introduced in the current 2020-2024 South Korean National Assembly. This bill is an amendment to the Animal Protection Act, prohibiting the act of slaughtering and processing of dogs and cats to use or sell for food.

With this petition’s global support, LCA and ALW are calling on the South Korean National Assembly to ensure the swift passage of this important legislation.

For eight months, beginning in October 2020 to May 2021, LCA and ALW conducted a comprehensive investigation into South Korea’s dog meat industry, focusing  on the supply chain of two of the biggest dog meat vendors in the Seongnam Moran Market, a.k.a. the “mecca of dog meat” and facilities associated with them. Click here to watch the undercover investigation.

Undercover investigators documented live dogs being supplied to slaughterhouses from Seongnam Moran Market, a dog auction house near Yeoju City, a dog meat farm near Eumseong City, and a slaughterhouse in Yeoju City. Cruelty to animals was documented at all facilities by investigators.

Although the vast majority of South Koreans oppose dogs being killed for meat, the Government has continued to ignore public outcry, and has not advanced prior legislation to ban dog slaughter. LCA and ALW, along with your support, are urging the South Korean Government to update the law and ban dog and cat slaughter for food to represent the will of the public.
