Why this petition matters

Started by Caius Robertson

6 months after the passing of Stephen Hillenburg, creator of the beloved cartoon series SpongeBob SquarePants, Nickeloden have greenlit production on a spinoff titled Kamp Koral. The series will be a prequel to the original cartoon and will focus around a 10-year old SpongeBob. Kamp Koral is set to begin production in March 2019, and will consist of 13 episodes.

Stephen Hillenburg himself was strongly against the idea of ever creating a SpongeBob spinoff and Paul Tibbit, former showrunner for SpongeBob Squarepants expressed his feelings on Twitter:

"I do not mean any disrespect to my colleagues who are working on this show. They are good people and talented artists. But this is some greedy, lazy executive-ing right here, and they ALL know full well Steve would have HATED this. Shame on them."

This new series goes against the wishes of Mr. Hillenburg, who would never have wanted this to happen. Nickeloden have been exploiting his creation long before his passing and now to exploit it further in such an egregious way is extremely disrespectful to Mr. Hillenburg.

Hillenburg touched the hearts of many people with his cartoon, which is unfortunately now being used as nothing more than a money machine for Nickeldeon and Viacom. Stephen was a creative man who wanted to share his love of marine biology with children everywhere, his passion radiated from every episode in the first three seasons.

Nickeloden should not be allowed to get away with creating this series. Kamp Koral is an insult to the love and care that Stephen put into the original show and characters. To disregard his wishes and create this series only 6 months after his passing is nothing short of deplorable. If there is any way we can stop this series from happening then we absolutely should, to honour the wishes of Mr. Hillenburg because clearly the people behind this show do not care about that.
