On September 11, 2001, the world changed. 

So many of our loved ones were murdered - sons and daughters, husbands and wives, parents, and friends. Others were hurt, but survived. These survivors are still fighting their own demons today.

Heroes - both first responders and “ordinary” citizens - stepped in to save lives. Now, nineteen years later, so many of those heroes are battling 9/11-related illnesses, slowly dying.

Every year, families of the fallen gather at the 9/11 Memorial plaza to read the names of the 2,983 people who had their lives taken from them by terrorists in the September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993 attacks at the World Trade Center. Reading the names of the fallen aloud serves as a reminder that these were real people. It humanizes them, and shows the scale of this loss.

This year, because of COVID-19, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum is not allowing this reading of the names to take place. Families will be permitted to gather, but a past recording will be played instead.

9/11 was the biggest attack on America and the greatest loss the first responder community has ever experienced. We must allow this community and the families of the fallen to honor their loved ones properly.
