On a day when we are laying to rest an absolute legend of a man, Andrew McLucus, at the age of just 48, I wanted to start this petition in his honour, to try and bring about change within the Fire Services and health system throughout the UK.

It is a well known fact that firefighters are exposed to toxic atmospheres and dangerous carcinogens on a daily basis whilst fulfilling their duties. Risking their lives, and putting their own health on the line in order to help and protect others in their communities. Yet there is still no mandate or policy for regular checks or screening for cancer throughout their careers. A firefighter currently has a 3 yearly medical, which involves no cancer screening, even when there is a known link between firefighters and cancer.

We can make change happen, but the first step is showing government that what is currently in place is nowhere near adequate, and our firefighters deserve better. This needs to be brought up and debated properly in Parliament. By supporting this petition you would be playing your part in helping those brave men and women who put so much on the line for you and your community get the best possible health care. Regular screening to detect any abnormalities as early as possible, and the best possible treatment should the worst happen.

Andy was a super fit 48 year old man, a fantastic firefighter, a father and partner, and a friend to everyone who had the privilege to meet him. He served both his country and community, here in Northern Ireland, and whilst serving in London Fire Brigade and the Armed Forces. This may come too late for him, but if we can make a change in his name for the thousands of other Fire Service personnel throughout the UK then that can only be a good thing. Andy cared about others more than he cared about himself, he always did, and I know this would be something he would support wholeheartedly. 

If we win, and change comes from this petition we would be giving thousands of firefighters and their families the peace of mind that they are being adequately looked after, just as they look after each and everyone in their own communities.
