JUSTICE FOR JOSEPH SMEDLEY//links for more popular petition/fb group started by Vivianne/gofundme at the bottom.

June 15, 2015, Joseph tweeted "perhaps I've said too much". Sometime around then he also changed his Twitter bio to say "if found dead in police custody, it wasn't suicide/ And i don't want peaceful protests".

September 28th, 2015 at 4:15am, Joseph went missing. His sister, Vivianne, received a text from Joseph's phone saying he was going to leave the country that night. He didnt have a passport, so it would have been impossible for him to leave the country. A note was also found at his apartment with a similar message written. Loved ones thought it was weird that he signed the note with just "Smedley". Vivianne said that not only did it not look like Joseph's handwriting but it also looked like it was written by someone left-handed. Joseph was last seen with members of his fraternity, Sigma Pi.

5 days later, Joseph was found in Griffy lake, in 3 ft deep shallow water. He had a bag with 66lbs of rocks strapped to his chest and binoculars wrapped around his neck. Joseph's death was ruled a suicide by the Monroe County Coroner's office on December 4th, 2015. No notion of depression or self-harm have been noted to suspect suicide as the probable cause. Additionally, on the day Joseph's body was found, a twitter account posing as his mother replied to his last tweet. The account was created on the same day just for the purpose of responding to Joseph's tweet to make it seem as if Joseph Smedley was in fact going out of the country to the US Virgin Islands.

On Wednesday Oct. 7th, a vigil was held for both IU students Joseph Smedley and Yaolin Wang. No one who came up to speak about Joseph referred to him as "Smedley" as the note in his apartment was signed except for one person who was the speaker for Sigma Pi. He referred to Joseph as "Smedley" 4 times, just like in the note. Joseph's roomates Jake Lewis and Benjamin Myatt were also in the Sigma Pi.

Vivianne Smedley was able to hire a forensic pathologist to have a second autopsy done and when he reached out to Bloomington Police Department to collaborate and go over the circumstantial evidence they shut him completely out, which is abnormal for a police department to do when a family disagrees with the results.
The forensic pathologist was able to tell her that the autopsy showed hemorrhaging on his back and that they definitely didn’t believe it was suicide. He also said that Bloomington Police Deparment did a poor job of retrieving his body, that they didn’t bother to put his clothing into evidence, just shoved everything in his body bag. Students who went to check out the crime scene the day afterwards claimed there wasn't even any yellow tape up around the scene.

Please join us in the fight for justice for Joseph's murder that Indiana University, Bloomington Police Department, & the Monroe County Coroner's Office all had a part in covering up. We must re-open this case and re-launch this investigation. We must also push for the subpoena of documents from BPD, so that they can conclude his second autopsy to find justice for Joseph and his family.

Here is a facebook link for Joseph started by Vivianne, she deserves all the respect for her fight these past five years. There's also a link for a seperate petition on change for Joseph Smedley someone else started I'll include underneath . Thank you.
