Why this petition matters

Started by Justin Lewis

Downtown Winnipeg, where hundreds if not thousands of people live on the streets, has one safe, permanent public washroom. The staff there provide sanitary supplies and personal support. They have saved people's lives from opioid poisoning. They have found housing for people who had none. This washroom, Amoogiwamig at 715 Main Street, has just been acknowledged by the City of Winnipeg as "a tremendous success." Yet, it is going to be closed for 16 out of every 24 hours because of inadequate funding.

Keeping Amoogiwamig open and staffed 24/7 would cost about $650 thousand a year. The city has budgeted only $200 thousand. This is out of a budget in the hundreds of millions of dollars!

In every hour that Amoogiwamig is closed, human beings like you and me are reduced to relieving themselves on the streets, with nowhere to wash up.

Please sign this petition to the City of Winnipeg for full funding for this support for human dignity, health, and life.
