End High Prices In McGill Cafeterias — Affordable Food Is A Right!
The Issue
On McGill's campus, cafeterias charge up to $17.69 for a boxed salad and $5.82 for a single granola bar. The prices in the university's cafeterias have reached an impossible level and it's forcing students to skip or minimize their meals. Low-income students are most impacted by these high prices, and are disproportionately students of color. And yet, despite this rising food insecurity on campus, McGill's Board of Governors and Hospitality Services have not stepped in to subsidize cafeteria prices.
Two decades ago, McGill had several affordable, student-run cafeterias and food stores. However, those closed after the university signed an exclusive, private contract with Dana Hospitality. Students living in residence are forced to pay for a year-long meal plan that costs $6,200. Many first-year students end up spending even more on food - $6.2k is not enough to buy three daily meals at the cafeterias.
Food security is a right. McGill must lower cafeteria prices to protect the health of its students, faculty, and staff. Let's bring affordable, student-run food options back to McGill's campus!
Students, faculty, and staff are gathering on Tuesday, March 7th at 6PM in the Arts Building room W-215 for a first assembly on this issue. Join the assembly to share your experience with campus food & strategize for an affordable, alternative future.
