Bring back the bike lane trial in Kerferd Road
Bring back the bike lane trial in Kerferd Road
Why this petition matters
Making cycling safer on Kerferd Road, Albert Park is critical for active transport in Melbourne. Bike lanes protected from parked and moving cars are the proven way to ensure cyclists can ride with confidence.
In early 2022, VicRoads proposed a trial of a parking-protected bike lane on Kerferd Road. Kerferd Road connects sporting facilities, local schools, and, in the future, the new Anzac station. This is a great opportunity to boost active transport - a win for the health of cyclists and a win for the environment. The City of Port Phillip has identified that this section of road has a high level of crashes, often leading to serious injuries to cyclists.
The protected bike lane trial was abandoned by VicRoads in April 2022, citing community concerns. VicRoads did not attempt to address these concerns through correcting misinformation, or take the opportunity to modify the original design.
A trial can address any unforeseen consequences of the bike lanes for both residents and cyclists. Further design changes could occur before any permanent bike lanes were implemented, as planned in the Shrine to Sea project.
We call on our local member, Minister Martin Foley, and Roads Minister Ben Carroll, to reinstate the trial.
