Support Restoration of Funding for DES Research and Apology for FDA Approval
Support Restoration of Funding for DES Research and Apology for FDA Approval
Why this petition matters
We who have been exposed to DES (diethylstilbestrol), along with our families, friends, and supporters, ask for an apology from the FDA for their approval of the drug DES and its use in pregnant women. In addition, we urge the NIH (National Institutes of Health) to restore and increase funding for the ongoing research on the health and reproductive harms of DES-exposed individuals.
DES was the first endocrine-disrupting chemical to be used in humans. Over the past 50 years, research has linked DES exposure to cancers, infertility, tumors, and more. The DES Follow-up Study continues research about DES and reveals how the effects of an endocrine-disrupting drug can continue for generations. (See DESAction.org for a complete history of DES and its harms).
We applaud Rep. McGovern's February 2, 2023 letter to the US Health and Human Services Department requesting a "formal apology to illuminate the dangers of endocrine disruptors and the continued need for research, including restoration of the DES Follow-up Study."
Millions of people today are affected by endocrine-disrupting chemicals including DES and an apology and continuation of this research are paramount to this nation's health.
