The expansion of the London Mayor's ultra low emission zone (ULEZ) on August 29th 2023, has led to thousands of vehicles being scrapped in exchange for a subsidy payment. Both supporters and enemies of the scheme regret roadworthy vehicles being scrapped when the suitable ones could be sent instead to Ukraine in their hour of need, and where emissions are bottom of their immediate list of priorities. 

The Mayor did a 'U-Turn' on Dec 23 but there is no scheme in place at the end of January, 2024, just a conversation between officials. In fact TfL admitted (late Jan, 2024) that 41,000 vehicles have now been scrapped, even while volunteers and charities spend thousands of their own cash buying similar vehicles for Ukraine. It is crazy.

Now is the moment for the Mayor to amend his controversial scrappage scheme, rescue some moral dignity from it, help Ukraine as he says he wants to and release the suitable vehicles for volunteers to deliver them where they are needed.
