Why this petition matters

Started by charlotte safrit

As a survivor of breast cancer, I understand the critical role early detection plays in treatment and recovery. In my community of Allentown, PA, I have heard countless stories from pregnant and breastfeeding mothers who were told they could not get imaging. I personally put off getting a mammogram because my Doctors told me I had to wean before I could have imaging done. When my cancer was discovered it had already spread to one lymph node. This misinformation has led to delayed diagnosis and treatment for too many!

Breastfeeding does not make mammography impossible or ineffective. It is a myth that lactating breasts are too dense for radiographers to read accurately. According to The Radiological Society of North America, MD Anderson, and La Leche League International (LLLI), it is safe and possible for breastfeeding individuals to undergo mammograms.

This delay in diagnosis can lead to the spread of cancer before weaning occurs, resulting in more severe health outcomes. We need healthcare professionals across our city—and indeed our country—to pledge an end this harmful practice.

We call on all healthcare professionals in Allentown, PA, and beyond: Please encourage mammograms among breastfeeding individuals who suspect something may be wrong with their health. Early detection saves lives—let's ensure everyone has access regardless of their breastfeeding status.

Please sign and share this petition if you believe in equal access to life-saving early detection for all people.
