The Rivers State chapter of  the Nigerian Union of Teachers(NUT) over the past 10 years,  has been systematically defrauding the teaching staff of the Rivers State Government which it illegally conscripted.

The Government teachers who have not been promoted, or seen an increase to their meagre salaries in the past 10 years are being exploited by an organisation which was purportedly set up to agitate for better welfare and working conditions of its "members."

Monies are deducted illegally and at will from salaries which cannot  feed and cater for the welfare of an individual talkless of fledgling families. These atrocities are carried out under the guise of;  dues, levies and "voluntary contributions" which have never been approved of  by the staff. A major issue to be taken into consideration is the fact that these monies are being deducted from supposed members of the union who have never filled membership forms. The staff are also not aware of the activities of the union neither have they shown any interest in becoming its members. 

In the just concluded month of June 2023 where inflation, cost of living and transportaion has doubled, a minimum of 4000 naira  has been deducted from the salary of  each government teacher by the Draconian union.

The Teachers of the Rivers State Government hereby ask that all monies deducted by the union during the year 2023 be refunded to every staff affected and that the executives of the said union both at the State and Local Governments levels be suspended and the union accounts frozen while an audit into the financial dealings of the union during the past 10years be carried out.

We also use this medium to call upon the Governor of the state to look into the working conditions and salaries of its Teachers.
