Petition Against Rhode Island's Assault Weapons Ban

We, the citizens of Rhode Island, oppose the proposed assault weapons ban for the following reasons:

Violation of State and Federal Rights: Rhode Island's own constitution mirrors the U.S. Constitution in affirming the right to bear arms. This proposed ban would infringe upon these rights, limiting the freedom of law-abiding Rhode Islanders to choose how they protect themselves, engage in sports, or preserve their cultural heritage.

Ineffectiveness in Reducing Crime: Rhode Island has relatively low rates of gun violence compared to other states, and there's no substantial evidence that banning so-called "assault weapons" would further decrease these rates. Past bans have not significantly impacted crime statistics, suggesting that criminals do not follow such laws, leaving only lawful citizens disarmed.

Vague and Misleading Definitions: The term "assault weapon" often refers to firearms based on their appearance rather than their function. Many of the firearms targeted by this ban are semi-automatic rifles used for hunting, sport shooting, and home defense. This ban could target common rifles that are no more dangerous than other legally available firearms.

Self-Defense: In Rhode Island, where population density can mean quicker response times but also potentially more immediate threats, citizens should not be restricted in their choice of self-defense tools, especially when facing multiple or armed assailants.

Local Culture and Heritage: Rhode Island has a rich history with firearms, from colonial times to present-day sportsmen. This legislation would impact local shooting sports, competitions, and the community of law-abiding gun owners who contribute to the state's cultural identity.

Mental Health and Law Enforcement: Rather than focusing on the types of firearms, we should enhance our mental health services and support law enforcement with resources to combat illegal gun use. Addressing the root causes of violence and ensuring criminals are held accountable is more effective than banning certain types of guns.

Economic Impact: Gun shops, shooting ranges, and related businesses would suffer, and there would be a loss in tax revenue. Additionally, any ban would likely lead to legal challenges, costing the state in legal fees and lost economic activity.

We urge the Rhode Island General Assembly to reconsider this ban and instead focus on solutions that truly address public safety without compromising the rights of peaceful citizens.

Please sign this petition to maintain our constitutional rights.

Sincerely Paul Rianna Jr
