We are healthcare workers in Australia, and we have been witnessing the devastating impact of conflict on Gaza. In just three short months, we've seen a healthcare system crumble, 23,000 lives lost and over 50,000 people seriously injured. The suffering is immense - especially among children.

This is why we are calling on the Australian government to stand with South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice. The international community has a responsibility to protect civilians and ensure access to basic human rights such as health care.  Australia has recently affirmed a commitment to international law and upholding of the genocide convention in the Ukraine-Russia conflict.  Both Penny Wong and Mark Dreyfus strongly supported the ICJ investigation of Russia.  To quote Dreyfus:

“Australia stands unequivocally with Ukraine in its fight to hold Russia accountable for the despicable allegations used as the pretext for its illegal and immoral invasion.

“Our intervention before the International Court of Justice demonstrates Australia’s unwavering commitment to upholding fundamental rules of international law and the integrity of the Genocide Convention.”

According to Al Jazeera.com ‘In an application to the court on Friday 29th December 2023, South Africa described Israel’s actions in Gaza as “genocidal in character because they are intended to bring about the destruction of a substantial part of the Palestinian national, racial and ethnical group”. The acts in question include “killing Palestinians in Gaza, causing them serious bodily and mental harm, and inflicting on them conditions of life calculated to bring about their physical destruction,” the application said.’Australia has always championed human rights on international platforms. Now more than ever, it must use its influence for justice and peace in Gaza by supporting South Africa’s stance at the International Court of Justice.
