We are a South African youth-led nonprofit striving to combat public sexual harassment and create safer spaces for women, girls, and other marginalised groups. Public Sexual Harassment is one of the most unregulated, overlooked, and misunderstood violations of fundamental rights of women and girls. These forms of harassment constrain women’s freedom of movement. Through our proposed safeguarding pop-up tents at events and music festivals, we hope to create safer, more informed entertainment environments fostering a culture of respect and consent.

The safeguarding pop-ups will serve as a visible presence for raising awareness about sexual harassment. They will provide information on how to report incidents and where to seek support - crucial resources that can empower attendees against such violations.

According to a 2018 UK study, 34% of female respondents reported being sexually harassed or assaulted at a festival. This statistic is alarming and is likely higher in the South African context.

We believe that implementing these safeguarding pop-ups can be an important step towards addressing this issue head-on by providing immediate assistance while simultaneously educating attendees about their rights.
