Why this petition matters

Started by Shanna Ward

In honor and remembrance of John T. Ward born March 19th, 1820 - an abolitionist, Underground Railroad conductor, and the founder of the oldest Black-owned business in America - we urgently propose the recognition and implementation of a national initiative, namely, Power March Day. This day is a reflection of resilient entrepreneurship and liberation stemming from Ward's enduring legacy. It is a call to individuals across the nation to support and invest in Black-owned businesses.

The significance of Power March Day lies in empowering our economy, recognizing our historical figures, and building our community. We wish to urge individuals and organizations to support Black-owned businesses intentionally throughout March every year, thereby promoting economic empowerment. By remembering and honoring John T. Ward, we acknowledge his invaluable contribution as a businessman and freedom fighter to American history, giving historical recognition its deserved place. Moreover, we aim to strengthen economic networks within Black communities, fostering collaboration, and celebrating Black excellence in business, thereby serving as a catalyst for community building.

By signing our petition, we can seek acknowledgement and dedicated commemoration to the legacy of John T. Ward, uplifting and investing in Black-owned businesses on a nationwide scale. This is more than a petition; it is a path towards creating a more equitable and inclusive economic future. John T. Ward’s legacy can guide us on this path.

Please join our cause, sign, and share this petition. Let us make Power March Day a recognized reality, reminding us of our historical heroes while paving the way for future successes within the Black community.
