Why this petition matters

Started by Amir

We assert that it is a substantial violation of privacy when numerous internet services or technology companies restrict users from deleting their accounts. This practice starkly contravenes the Right to be Forgotten, a critical aspect of citizenship rights. As the digital landscape expands swiftly, it's imperative for this right to be universally recognized. In today's interconnected world, owning and controlling our personal information and data is a fundamental human right. Therefore, adopting comprehensive data protection regulations, similar to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), is crucial for all countries, including Iran.

This would empower individuals to demand, without exception:

  • The complete deletion of their data.
  • The assurance that their information is irretrievably disposed of.
  • What is the Right to be Forgotten on the Internet?

The Right to be Forgotten is the entitlement of individuals to have their personal information expunged from internet search engines and other directories under specified conditions. Since its inception in the EU and Argentina in 2006, this concept has grown from the fundamental human desire to shape one's destiny independently, free from the perpetual or occasional stigma of past actions.

What is the status of the Right to be Forgotten in Iran?

In Iran, the Right to be Forgotten is not adequately addressed. Erasing an individual's account from Iranian sites and applications often proves to be arduous, if not impossible. While regulations may influence the services' operations, diverse methods are needed for platforms to begin offering this right to their users.

It's vital to note that granting these essential rights does not detract from business interests but rather enhances their appeal among users. In an era deeply integrated with the internet, the choice isn't merely whether to use a service based on its data deletion policies but to demand, "Where is our right?"

The Iranian initiative, www.RTBF.ir, is actively working to advocate for the Right to be Forgotten within the Persian web and internet community. As an open-source project, it invites participation from all to further this cause. Your involvement and endorsement can significantly impact the recognition and implementation of this fundamental right. Join us in this campaign to assert our digital rights and freedoms.
