Why this petition matters

Dress codes are instilled in schools all over the world. The teachers and officials on the school board say the same rules apply to everyone, but that is not the case. Females are dress coded for showing bra straps and shoulders while some males walk around showing their abdominal area and higher without getting in trouble. It has been like this for years, and it's time to make a change.

Girls are taught from a very young age that they need to cover up their bodies. For example, a girl in fourth grade almost got dress coded for wearing a tank top with straps "too thin". An eleven year old girl was dress coded for having shorts that were about two centimetres above the "finger tip test". A girl in seventh grade was dress coded for showing less than an inch of skin on her stomach.

Equality is what we are trying to achieve. We aren't saying that people should be able to wear whatever they want in school buildings, as that would go too far, but we are saying that the same rules should apply to everyone. If females can't show their chest, neither can males. If females have to be covered from shoulders to thighs, so should males. Girls should be able to wear clothes that enhance their natural features, and so should boys.

In a school, it shouldn't matter how long your shorts are or how much of your skin is covered. Sure, some rules need to be set just in case, but saying that females have to be covered from neck to mid-thigh is a little extreme. Females should be able to wear crop tops that show a little bit of skin, or shorts that come a little above the so called "finger tip test". It is truly sad to see that the school administrative board favors male comfort over female education.

All we want is equality. If that means strict dress codes for everyone, so be it. We will not stop until males are held to follow the same rules as females, and if it takes years, so be it. In society, equality should be what matters.
