Why this petition matters

Started by Julie El-Bahrawy

NHS Lambeth have decided to stop funding this much loved organisation, that has existed for more than thirty years. Not only does it provide valuable support and training, SRA improves the mental wellbeing of people with long-term, often severe, mental health conditions, and also provides a useful service for the people of Lambeth and surrounding areas. This much loved local charity is a precious asset that is valued by many people in Lambeth, including local businesses and residents. Lambeth will save a relatively small amount of money but their actions will devastate the lives of the people that regularly use the service and take part in the activities provided. Lambeth residents will be a far poorer without the support of SRA and the future of the organisation as a whole is in jeopardy unless we can regain Lambeth’s support or find alternative funding.

The alternative support being offered by Lambeth will offer SRA clients only employment advice - one interview - and access to a drop in centre (which they are already able to access). This is a short term fix, without any indication of cost savings, or potential future costs if clients' ability to cope deteriorates. More importantly, it provides no ongoing support for people with long term conditions, who already get encouragement from SRA, after careful assessment, to go to college or take on some work. Destroying an established support system for some of its most vulnerable residents - without any assessment of the risk that poses for them - is surely not what Lambeth stands for.

We have therefore started this online petition so that many of our supporters, service users, local people and the wider community can show how strongly they feel about the situation. We urge Lambeth to reconsider their decision, continue to support SRA and the people we serve and allow our organisation to continue to thrive.
