Why this petition matters

Started by Knolly Moses

Ormsby Hall is named after the Rev Stephen Oliver Ormsby, rector of the original St. Michael’s Church on Tower Street when the 1907 earthquake destroyed it. Rev Ormsby rebuilt the church  and after his death in 1924 the congregation raised funds and built a hall and named it after him.

It has served the community for more than 90 years as home to various community and church events. Today, Ormsby Hall is in ruins but can be saved for “the spiritual and social benefit of the people of the neighbourhood,” as Rev Cecil F. deCarteret, Lord Bishop promised when he opened Ormsby Hall on June 5, 1930.

The building needs to be renovated for community and church use. Even in its present state it has housed a major art exhibition and several performances. We see it as part of the revitalization of Downtown Kingston.

If we can’t convince the church to save the building it will be sold to  commercial interests to build an office complex.
