Urgent Closure of Bakkafrost’s Portree Salmon Farm
Urgent Closure of Bakkafrost’s Portree Salmon Farm
Why this petition matters
We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned and urge you to take immediate action regarding the welfare of salmon and the environmental impact of fish farming at Bakkafrost’s Portree facility on the Isle of Skye.
The evidence presented by lifelong activist Don Staniford showcases an egregious level of animal suffering at the Bakkafrost Portree salmon farm. His documentation reveals salmon with severe injuries, akin to what one might find in a horror film, pointing to a failure in maintaining anti-predator netting and thus a clear case of animal welfare abuse. Such conditions not only cause immense suffering to the fish but also tarnish the reputation of the region.
Furthermore, environmental concerns regarding fish farming are well-documented. Issues such as waste runoff, spread of disease to wild fish populations, and the use of chemicals to treat these farmed fish are causing irrevocable harm to our marine ecosystems. As the representative of an area that boasts some of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the United Kingdom, it is imperative that you take a stand to protect our environment.
We call upon you to:
1. Enforce an immediate shutdown of Bakkafrost’s Portree salmon farm.
2. Refuse planning permission for future fish farms.
We trust in your leadership to advocate for the welfare of all creatures and the preservation of the environment in Ross, Skye, and Lochaber. We await your prompt action on this critical matter.
