On 04th of October 2022, it was announced by Green Ministers and Coal Group RWE that Lützerath, the place where climate activists have been peacefully fighting and living for over two years for the preservation and compliance with the 1.5 degree target of the Paris Climate Agreement, is to be mined for lignite.

If coal is burned under the Garzweiler villages, the Paris climate targets for Germany cannot be met. The 1.5-degree limit runs before Lützerath - this has been proven by a study of the German Institute for Economic Research! The World Weather organization even predicted that the 1.5-degree limit will already be reached in 2026 !!! 

For compliance with such a path compatible with the 1.5°C limit, the emissions of all power plants supplied from the Garzweiler and Hambach opencast mines for coal-fired power generation, excluding coal refining, should not exceed the total amount of max. 235 million tons of CO2 from the beginning of 2021. Garzweiler alone will now cause an additional 280 million tons of CO2 until 2030, six times more than would be permitted to meet the critical 1.5-degree limit (+ Inden open pit 113 million tons, + Hambach open pit 230 million tons!).

RWE has even begun dismantling 8 wind turbines in the Rhenish lignite mining region. An absurd action in times of the energy transition!!! 

That would additionally mean destruction of further most fruitful loess soils, of the monument square yard Diusserner yard of 1763, the grove, beautiful tree houses and the garden (KoLaWi), destruction of nature and habitat of many animals and plants! 

Above all there is the danger that it comes with an eviction to injured and unnecessary captures of climate protectors i.e. also of very young - perhaps even underage - people and older ones that do live in the trees and fight for the forest and against climate destruction! Who want to save the world for their future and the future of their children!  

There must be at least a moratorium!
Attac, Greenpeace and BUND, Alle Dörfer bleiben, Fridays for Future, Buirer für Buir, the Grüne Jugend, Greta Thunberg and many others have spoken out for the preservation of Lützerath, expert opinions (DIW) confirm that the lignite under Lützerath is not needed!!!

RWE commits global "trespass" ! 
Lignite under Lützerath is not needed even in the current crisis situation!
Bastian Neuwirth, Greenpeace expert on climate:"If Germany wants to prove its credibility internationally, the new federal government must deliver immediately on climate protection."

Germany must pay several million euros for missed climate targets from 2013 to 2020. State Secretary Giegold described the payment as a "retrospective slap in the face for the weak climate policy of the grand coalition". Germany is still getting off cheaply this time. In the future, higher penalties can be expected if the climate targets are not met.

We call on the state government to agree with RWE on a moratorium on the evacuation of Lützerath! We demand further constitutional complaints against the climate protection law! ->It is about the restriction of the freedom rights of future generations, because the law postpones the majority of climate protection measures to the years after 2030!!!
