The horrible war unfolding before our eyes in Ukraine has a name and a face: it is Vladimir Putin's war. This war is the consequence of an autocratic power which suppressed all political opposition and weakened the institutions that could have provided checks and balances. This war is also the consequence of the complicity of certain European officials with regard to the Russian authorities. Despite its numerous direct attacks on democratic values as well as on the sovereignty of other countries, certain French and European actors — entrepreneurs, elected officials, ministers, senior civil servants — have chosen to support Putin's regime by closing their eyes on the alarming signs threatening democracy or by minimizing their impact on European interests.

This war, a consequence of the excesses of an authoritarian regime, could not be avoided. Today, for the respect of democracy and the defense of peace, it is crucial to denounce the support given to the regime of Vladimir Putin by certain current and former elected officials in France and in the European Union as well as by companies, French and European, present on Russian soil. In this regard, it should be noted that French companies are legally bound by the 2017 law of the duty of vigilance and are therefore subject to the obligation to prevent serious violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms resulting from their activities or those of their commercial partners.

Several names and companies who could be concerned (non-exhaustive list):

  1. Former French Prime Minister François Fillon has joined the board of Russian petrochemical giant Sibur
  2. The former head of Austrian diplomacy Karin Kneissl, who had danced a waltz with Vladimir Putin during his marriage in 2018, was appointed in June to the Russian oil giant Rosneft.
  3. Thierry Mariani and the other 11 French politicians who traveled to Crimea for the 5th anniversary of "reunification" with Russia
  4. the former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder the chairman of the board of directors of Rosneft, the first Russian oil group, and of the shareholders' committee of Nord Stream 2, a controversial Russian-German gas pipeline, suspended by Germany.
  5. Companies: TotalEnergies, GEAST, Yves Rocher whose activities have made it possible to strengthen Russian positions vis-à-vis Europe in the energy field or vis-à-vis internal opposition.

Consequently, we call on you to sign this petition to request the opening of a judicial inquiry and the establishment of sanctions against these people and companies.

We demand:

  1. Judicial inquiry into French and European political leaders (elected officials, ministers, senior civil servants) who have performed or are currently performing functions within Russian state companies, including inquiry into the remuneration and benefits received during these appointments.
  2. Judicial inquiry into the benefits received by the subsidiaries of French and European companies in Russia for having provided support, directly or indirectly, to the regime of Vladimir Putin.

Created in 2012, the “Russie-Liberties” association is an independent organization whose main objective is to support the development of a democracy worthy of the name and the defense of human rights in Russia. The means employed by the association reflect the desire to share objective information on the political situation in the country. It strives to report regularly on the state of institutions, freedoms and human rights in Russia.
