I am a firm believer in the Second Amendment which clearly states “Shall Not Be Infringed”. The US Supreme Court has consistently upheld this right, emphasizing that prohibitive laws to keeping and bearing arms must be within this nation history, text, and tradition!!

Yet, we now face a threat to our rights with HB24-1292, grossly named “Prohibit Certain Weapons Used In Mass Shootings” which is designed to sound advantageous to preventing mass shooting events to the uninformed.

This proposed bill is not only an infringement on our constitutional rights but also a misguided attempt at solving the problem of mass shootings.

This Bill not only goes after AR and AK style rifles, but all semi-automatic rifles capable of excepting a detachable magazine and has a pistol grip or threaded barrel, all semi-automatic pistols capable of accepting a detachable magazine and that have a threaded barrel, and all semi-automatic shotguns that have a pistol grip.

The bill also would ban 50 caliber rifles, which zero 50 caliber rifles have been used in mass shootings.

Additionally, mass shootings actually increased during the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban compared to the previous 10 years which this bill says otherwise. Violence with firearms in general have decreased 19% since the expiration of the 94’ AWB even though manufacturing and sales significantly increased.

Moreover, using tragic events and their victims' lives as leverage for political gain is deeply troubling. It's important for us to remember that criminals do not obey laws; they will find ways around them while law-abiding citizens are left defenseless.

We must urge our representatives in the Colorado General Assembly to vote against HB24-1292. Instead of focusing on banning certain weapons, let's focus on effective measures such as improving mental health services and saving lives without any infringement on any rights.
