Why this petition matters

Trayvon Martin was shot and killed on February 26th, 2012 while walking in a neighbourhood by George Zimmerman. With a corrupt Lead Detective, Serino, on the case, a jury of 5 white women and one woman of colour, Trayvon Martin was not served justice.

Trayvon Martin was walking through a neighbourhood on a phone call with a friend when George Zimmerman saw him and called the police. He told the dispatcher that Trayvon Martin “looks like he’s up to no good or he’s on drugs or something”. The dispatcher told him not to do anything.

When asked to recount what happened, Zimmerman said that he was attacked by Trayvon Martin who repeatedly slammed Zimmerman’s head into the ground (although Zimmerman was taller and 40 pounds heavier than Trayvon Martin). He then said that Trayvon Martin reached for Zimmerman’s gun, which was tucked into a holster behind him and invisible to Trayvon Martin.

In court, Zimmerman never had to take the witness stand and when Detective Serino was on the stand, 9 questions were asked by the prosecution, each question was objected by the defense and each objection was sustained. Serino did not have to answer a single question.

Although he was charged with second degree murder and manslaughter, he was acquitted of all charges and walked free.

George Zimmerman auctioned off the gun he shot Trayvon Martin with for over $100,000.

He is now suing the Martin family for $100 million in defamation
