Why this petition matters

Started by Hyperemesis Education and Research (HER) Foundation

Give all moms and babies a chance at a healthy future. No mother should die from Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) or its complications, and no pregnancy should be terminated due to inadequate care. Signing this international petition shows your support for global awareness, research, and standardized care that reduces the long-term, potentially life-threatening complications associated with HG.

International Definition: HG is a potentially life-threatening pregnancy disease that may cause weight loss, malnutrition, dehydration, and debility due to severe nausea and/or vomiting, and may cause long-term health issues for mother and baby(ies).

HG is a serious medical condition with a far-reaching impact that can last beyond pregnancy and for the lifetime of mother and child(ren). HG is not morning sickness!

Research shows that HG increases the risk of complications including:

  • Malnutrition
  • Dehydration
  • Sepsis
  • Hemorrhage
  • Preeclampsia
  • Premature birth
  • Heart damage and complications
  • Organ failure
  • Fetal loss
  • Brain injury (Wernicke's encephalopathy)
  • Trauma (PTSD)
  • Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders

1 in 3 babies does not make it to term due to prematurity, miscarriage, stillbirth, and unwanted termination. 3-9% of children born after HG will have neurodevelopmental delays, sensory processing disorder, behavioral issues, and/or autism. Many of these maternal and fetal complications as well as terminations can be prevented with effective treatment at the start of HG.

With this petition we seek the following:

Patient Care

  • Adoption of standardized assessment tools to identify and diagnose all suffering with HG in order to provide medical care and track incidence.
  • Implementation of comprehensive, universal treatment standards that address the needs of patients, including nutritional interventions.
  • Screening postpartum for short and long-term complications that require treatment and tracking.
  • Administration of 100 mg/day of thiamin as standard of care to prevent Wernicke’s encephalopathy and cardiac damage, as well as protect fetal development.

Policy Measures

  • Mandatory education of health professionals that encounter pregnant women to increase awareness of HG symptomology, effective treatment strategies, and prevention of its associated complications.
  • Expanded research into genetic causes of HG in order to find a cure, validation of treatment protocols, and development of recovery strategies.
  • Modification of perinatal death certificates to include if a patient is pregnant, as well as all pregnancy related complications, including all contributing causes of death.
  • Exploration of strategies, including disability and unemployment, for women with HG who are unable to work for extended time periods, as well as psychosocial support for families facing HG, its stigma, and its associated complications.

Sign to make a measurable impact on maternal and child health and help save the lives of mothers and babies!
