My name is Zara, I am 10 years old.  I attend Prestwich Prep School.  I witness with trepidation my school  colleagues/parents and pedestrians struggling to cross this very busy section of Bury Old Road. The staff and  pupils at this school with the local residents would like Bury Council to consider high priority for a crossing outside Prestwich Preparatory School/ Nursery. This crossing would benefit the school children, parents and pedestrians living or visiting this local area.

This section of Bury Old Road is extremely busy with constant traffic flow  and can take anything up to 7 minutes to cross. The gate for Heaton Park is next to the school and is used constantly by local residents, but this main road is becoming a barrier for many pedestrians. 

Within the local vicinity to the school there is a chiropodist, dentist, cake shops, accountants, scuba shop, beauty parlour, chippy, and local convenience shop. There are people visiting from outside this area who are using these businesses and the  school and they are also finding it difficult to cross this main road. 

A crossing outside the school is considered low priority by the council, and the council state there is no funding.  However, a crossing has just been put on Heys Road near Heys School. Road safety should be considered priority by the council outside all schools whether they are public or private schools. 

This petition is to convince the council to change its stance about a crossing outside this school.  I would like the council to realise that it is not the number of people crossing this main road, but difficulty crossing which is a major concern. 

The council will not do anything, until something drastic occurs. I am trying to prevent such a potential accident. 

 You may have to visit this local area one day and need to cross this busy road, so please help me to change the councils decision by signing this petition for a crossing.

P.S My headteacher has recently shown me a proposal by the council for a crossing at the junction of Heys road and Bury Old Road. This is part of the traffic calming measures for the Prestwich area, however these are only proposals and may not come to fruition. I am asking the council for priority to be given for a crossing outside this school regardless of the outcome of the proposals.
