Why this petition matters

As Labour Party members, we believe that it is vital that the Party recognises the particular issues faced by women, who bore the brunt of austerity, were hard hit by the Covid pandemic, face additional consequences in the cost of living crisis, and who often face barriers in organising due to caring and domestic responsibilities and issues around personal safety .

We were delighted when the Labour Party Rule book enshrined our ability to have a delegate-based, policy making standalone conference and note the success of previous women's conferences.

We are deeply concerned that a date has not yet been set for Annual Women's Conference 2023 and we call on the NEC to take urgent action to ensure that a timetable is agreed and publicised to ensure that women can play a full role in preparing for a Labour Government. We call for an early meeting of the National Labour Women's Committee to be convened, in line with Rule Book Chapter 11A Clause 1, to carry out its leadership role in building the women's organisation and preparing annual Women's Conference, and to inform the NEC discussions.

We understand that Annual Women's Conference will be discussed by the NEC in early November and ask that they take on board the views of the democratically elected National Women's Committee and Women's Conference Arrangements Committees (as previously expressed), and women in the wider party and urgently set a date for a stand alone Women's Conference in 2023.
