2) RESPONSIBLE, BETTER, SAFER, and FASTER SOLUTIONS TO CLIMATE CHANGE, and Offshore Wind done right!

• Over 800,000 MORE acres of wild and free ocean is up for sale and at risk (areas shown in green on map above).
• Proposed lease sales would double the area for offshore wind energy development & total 1.2 Million Acres, the size of Grand Canyon National Park, with thousands of turbines built in this area as tall at the roof of the Empire State Building!

Once sold to big energy, the ocean will be no longer wild and free. We must get this right.

• Whales, dolphins, fish, and the ocean ecosystem are at risk.
• Current laws do not fully protect ocean resources from harm.
• The coast is also under attack by large-scale onshore industrial development to construct, operate, and maintain offshore wind infrastructure.
• Over 425,000 acres off NJ (areas shown in black in map above) are already underway for wind energy & could take over a decade to build without delays. The US has no experience in industrial offshore wind development.
• Projects must be tested first to ensure they are built correctly & are safe for marine life.
• Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s (BOEM) process lacks good governance, transparency, and meaningful public involvement.
• CHEAPER, SAFER, FASTER, CLEANER: It is imperative to PRIORITIZE, EXPEDITE, and IMPLEMENT ONSHORE GREEN OPTIONS NOW, including more energy reduction requirements and efficiency measures. The GREENEST energy of all is the energy people do not use, and it can save people thousands of dollars.

We, the undersigned, urge President Biden’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) to pause the lease sales of over 800,000 acres of ocean (i.e.., “NY Bight” area) to ensure responsible and reasonable offshore wind development and to protect marine resources, and expedite onshore cheaper, faster, safter cleaner options now!
