Save the countryside of Dunston Chesterfield before it's too late!
Why this petition matters
We must prevent the continued destruction of valuable productive agricultural land, meadows and woods. We need to protect safe havens for wildlife and the nature filled green spaces that we currently enjoy. Once they are gone, they are gone forever.
We strongly believe that the greenfields and woodlands off Dunston Rd should never have been included in Chesterfield’s local plan for housing development. Sadly, they are, and we need to fight hard to stop the building of another 500 houses on the site – this is in addition to the 300 that are already being built.
We know that we have an uphill struggle to prevent this massive development, so please sign our petition to stop:
- Destruction of habitat for wildlife which is already under stress in the UK. The hedgerows and trees are at particular risk on this site, a further threat to the decline in bird populations.
- Destruction of green spaces for walking, dog walking, horse riding and other recreation. Loss of this amenity would be a blow to physical and mental health for many people.
- Destruction of valuable farmland, threatening the UK’s food security. We already import 50% of our food, as population rises and farmland decreases the amount we need to import will increase.
- Increase in CO2 emissions from ‘ungreen’ house designs.
- The significant increase in traffic on Dunston Road, a narrow, dangerous country road. There would be road safety issues and increased congestion, noise and pollution across the Dunston and Newbold area and through Cutthorpe & Barlow.
- Additional burden on already stretched local services such as doctors, dentists and secondary schools etc.
- Overdevelopment of the area which will significantly reduce the strategic gap and green wedge between the development, Newbold, Dunston, Cutthorpe and other settlements.
Please add your voice so that we can convince Chesterfield Borough Council that this development would cause much more harm than benefit to the community. Let's stop the tsunami of house building on greenfields, meadows, farmland and woodland.
