Why this petition matters

Started by Tanya Garcia

Tyra was just 15 years old when she was murdered on May 27, 1985. She had gone missing after walking to her friend's house only a few doors down from her family home. There have been no answers, no movement, and no one taking this case seriously for 37 years. it's time for that reign of inaction to end.

Her case was reopened in 2021, and since then it has had very little movement. The only movement it had received was because of myself, Tanya, and the friends and advocates willing to help me with this fight calling, emailing, posting comments on social media, and hounding the Ventura County Sheriff's Department  and the DA's Violent Crimes Unit.

In the last several months we have:

  • Given the investigator a new and viable lead.
  • Collected FOIAs and had outside experts look at the information available.
  •  We've called and had multiple conversations with the investigator who assured us that in all likelihood no one will be held accountable for this crime.
  • We've made our own online campaign for information.
  • We've done everything we could do within the confines of the law.

As Tyra Garcia's sister, it is  unacceptable the the footwork of the investigation is being done by me.

37 years ago the investigation was haphazard and underwhelming.  The media coverage was very sparse. It seemed that the community was the only entity taking any action. Not much has changed from then to now and that needs to be rectified. Tyra has been blamed for her own murder multiple times and we feel that this has always been in an effort to NOT have to give their full effort in this case.

We are asking for:

  • Re-assignment of Tyra's case to a person or agency that will take it seriously and reinvestigate the case with fresh eyes.
  • The Attorney General to encourage Ventura County to prioritize Tyra's case by retesting evidence, conducting new interviews,  and for baseless theories to stop.
  • Open communication between Tyra's family, family advocates, representatives, and the investigators as to what action is being taken (within reason) and what action there is to still be taken. In other words WORK WITH US!!!!!
  • Regular updates on case status without family having to harass the investigators to get a mere call back.
  • All leads no matter how large or small are to be investigated no matter how trivial they may seem.
  • A dedicated person or entity to investigate Tyra's case. As we have seen this case has been passed from hand to hand, we'd like that to change.
  • For any and all evidence to be re-examined including, but not limited to: DNA, Fibers, Hair and any other Trace Evidence collected from the body, clothing, blanket and surrounding area.

Tyra Maria Garcia's face should be remembered. Her name should be said. Her murder should be solved.

Please sign this petition to help us get Tyra's case the appropriate attention it has always deserved, but not gotten. With your signature, we are hoping that this will set a standard for how all cases should be handled from here on out. No stone left unturned, no more victim blaming, no more tunnel vision within the Ventura County Sheriff's Departments.

Tyra's family wants to thank everyone for their continued support. This would not be possible without the love and loyalty from all of you. Thank you!
