Why this petition matters

Victim-survivors of child sexual abuse are being denied justice in our courts. A loophole in the law lets perpetrators hide their assets in superannuation funds, leaving survivors without financial compensation to recover from the abuse.

Fighters Against Child Abuse Australia, along with Lawyer Andrew Carpenter, former Australian of the year Grace Tame, former Neighbours star Madeleine West and Sonya Ryan of the CRF have teamed up to form the Super For Survivors team and are calling on the government to reform the Bankruptcy Act, so that child sex offenders’ superannuation can be used to help victim-survivors rebuild their lives.

For years, brave victim-survivors of child sexual abuse have been seeing first hand how guilty offenders have hid millions of dollars to avoid paying them damages. This change will not only strip perpetrators of their super, but also save Australian taxpayer money that’s usually set aside for ongoing care and support of victim-survivors.

If this reform is implemented, it would go a long way to help survivors of serious crimes heal. While these changes can’t undo the lifetime damage of assault, it’s the least the government can do to compensate survivors and help them achieve the independence they deserve.

Upon their release, notorious paedophiles like Maurice Van Ryn and Peter Liddy should not be able to access their significant superannuation accounts and go back to their normal lives at the expense of survivors.

Despite bipartisan support of this change, nothing has been done to close this loophole or protect survivors. In 2018 the government said this issue was a priority, but so far nothing has changed.

Please sign and share this petition to call on the government to reform the Bankruptcy act, so that victim-survivors of child sexual abuse are financially empowered to rebuild their lives.
