Why this petition matters

San Mateo County is finally ready for it's first disc golf course. The Mirada East and Quarry properties are zoned for recreational use within the mid-coast hamlet of El Granada. This Championship course property is located seven miles north of Half Moon Bay and 30 minutes south of San Francisco.

Please sign this petition in support of eliminating any further reallocation of Measure G funding, established in 2014, to any other project except a disc golf course. From this point on, all Measure G funds are to be used specifically for the construction of a 10,000 foot long, 27 hole, Championship Level Disc Golf Course. This Mid-Coast masterpiece is designed to utilize 15 acres of the Mirada East park and 15 acres of Quarry Park.  We seek funding to continue these properties Disc golf course design. Build this disc golf course now!

Half Moon Bay Disc Golf Course History:

To get the coast side residents a course, Half Moon Bay Disc Golf Club knew we needed a Parks and Rec. revenue generator. So we got together with other mid-coast clubs and families and got Measure G onto the San Mateo County ballot in late 2013. Measure G passed and has been distributed ($50k annually) revenue since 2014. This measure was drafted as a way to support all of El Granadas' recreational expansion. i.e: Dog Park, Bike Pump Track, Disc Golf Course, picnic tables in the El Granada islands, etc.

As all clubs (mentioned above) went into organization and design mode, it didn't take long before we had position for a disc golf course. Mirada and Quarry are two adjoining (recreationally zoned) properties. They offer us 40 acres of majestic coastal views, including Mavericks big wave break, El Granada Jetty harbor and the iconic NORAD station with its giant white golf ball radar station. These properties have 200' of elevation changes; from 10' above the sandy beach line by Highway 1, tossin' through coastal grasses, all the way to the 'Top of the Quarry". At the "Top of the Quarry", it takes a majestic 400' hyzer bomb from the tee-pad (100' vertical above the Quarry floor), to get to the basket with a driver. At that same tee-pad, you are treated with 180 degree views of the Pacific Ocean.  You will see the "Mid-coasts' million dollar view" through swaying Euclyptus trees. This view alone puts this course into a league of it's own. (I see four, long and comfortable benches up there for extended view watching.) With all that property potential, only a top tier disc golf course designer can tackle the design. It has yet to reach a  Final state of design and that needs to be funded.

It's worth noting, when Measure G was first officially voted in, all these revenues immediately began to be consumed entirely into the planning, development and construction of El Granada's section of the California Coastal Trail. Truth be told, it has been money well spent. These funds have been wisely used to complete an incredible recreational feature for the Mid-Coast. In fact, I use this part of the Coastal trail, every chance I get; it's that beautiful. This mid-coast section of the coastal trail may arguably be the most stunning stretch of all the Northern California coastal trail sections. One day disc golfers will be waving at the bikers, joggers and dog walkers that will forever be using this coastal passage. That said, after 9 years and 100s of thousands of Measure G dollars spent, the entire El Granada section of coastal trail, with all signage, bathrooms and bridges has finally been completed.

At last, it's time to build a disc golf course. The environmental impact review was completed in 2019. Green light!

In closing,  it's time to build a park attraction that can be enjoyed by all people of all ages. When completed the local Middle school and Half Moon Bay High School will finally be able to expand their athletic curriculum to include disc golf. Mirada East and Quarry Park will soon be filled with cheers, chain baskets and laughter. It will be timeless. -KM
