Why this petition matters

Started by Mich Gonzalez

Just days before Christmas, ICE wrongfully deported a Black husband and father, tearing his family apart. His wife, 5-year-old daughter and newborn US citizen son are all waiting for him in Texas.

Before fleeing Haiti, he witnessed his cousin’s execution, was forced to watch his sister’s rape while held at gunpoint and was shot in the foot, all due to his father’s well-known, non-violent political activism. After he fled Haiti, his family’s persecutors severed his father’s arm with a machete. Now, he is once again living in fear because our government wrongfully deported him. To date, and in spite of submitting evidence of all these facts, DHS has not responded to our several requests that he be returned to the US. When they deported him, he had a pending case review with the asylum office and no history of violence nor any red flags in his case to justify this cruelty.

While he remained in detention (where he was forced to work for $1/day and was arbitrarily thrown into solitary confinement in a freezing cell wearing nothing but a medical gown for 3+ days without access to any water to drink or clean himself), his wife and daughter were released from ICE custody so they could safely pursue their asylum cases before the non-detained immigration court. This family has the right to continue that process together. Please sign this petition to urge DHS to reunite this family here in the US where they can be safe. You can also help the family by donating to their gofundme page here.
