We are a diverse group of people united by our love for the Bear River. We are farmers, ranchers, anglers, hunters, hikers, recreators & soakers from big cities and small towns all along this river's path. We are Idahoans, Utahns, Shoshone and more; as conservatives and liberals and everywhere in between - we stand together to protect our shared ecosystem here in the Oneida Narrows.

The proposed dam by Pacificorp & Rocky Mountain Power known as the Oneida Narrows Pumped Storage Facility threatens to destroy not just our environmental heritage but also disrupts recreational activities and cultural preservation efforts in the Bear River Valley.

At a time when The Great Salt Lake is drying up and efforts are underway to ensure that every drop from the Bear River reaches it's drying shores, a new upriver hydro storage dam is a move in the wrong direction.

Our Mountain West community thrives on the health and stability of not just the Bear River but also it's final destination - The Great Salt Lake. From Salt Lake City, Ogden, Brigham City, Cache Valley and all of Southern Idaho, the collapse of the Oneida Narrows as we know it due to this proposal has systemic consequences:

  • The Bear River upstream of the existing reservoir will be affected by water level fluctuations which would reverse river flow and current - disturbing all upriver wildlife, fish, and shoreline populations.
  • The existing Oneida Narrows reservoir will experience a rise and drop of 5-7 ft every 12 hours - creating a silt heavy disruption of water quality, water temperature, and shoreline health and accessibility. Fishing, hunting, boating, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, swimming and more will be drastically impeded in most areas due to an unpredictable and volatile shoreline stability.
  • The Bear River downstream of the existing reservoir will be equally affected by water quality, water temperature, construction impacts and more. Importantly, increased water volume storage will reduce water volumes that arrive at the Great Salt Lake.
  • Upper proposed reservoir area will affected by construction and drastically reduce recreational access to already limited public sections of the Bear River.

Together, these preliminary impacts are just the early signs of the social, environmental, and economic losses that await if Pacificorp and Rocky Mountain Power fail to withdraw their application for the Oneida Narrows Pump Storage Facility.

History may have been blind to the social & environmental losses of each new dam. Today, we know better. Entire species, ecosystems, & natural migratory paths of the wildlife upon which we depend will forever be disrupted.

We urge you to consider these impacts and stand with fellow Bear River advocates across Utah, Idaho and beyond and demand that Pacificorp halt its application for a any new dams along the Bear River.
