Transparency Required from the Calgary Police Service
Transparency Required from the Calgary Police Service
Why this petition matters
"As a Service we are committed to accountability and transparency."
- Mark Neufeld, Chief Constable of the Calgary Police Service
In the past 2 years, demands to defund the police have never been louder. The majority of the public came to realize that those they thought were meant to "protect and serve" their communities have actually caused more harm than good.
As we come to learn of more police misconduct in regard to Ward 4 councillor Sean Chu, we are left wondering how much more is being hidden from the public. It is insulting to hear words such as "accountability" and "transparency" while the same officials are actively hiding information to protect the interests of the institution rather than the public.
We, residents of the City of Calgary, demand the release of details of ALL complaints, charges and allegations against current Calgary Police Service officers. We have a right to know who the people are behind the badge and the gun, and ensure proper steps are taken in resolving these matters as we work towards creating safe communities. Police officers are not above the law, and should be held to the same account as anyone else. It is completely errant to do otherwise.
Details of the cases against Sean Chu:
Calgary police called in 2008 to domestic incident involving Sean Chu and firearm
Coun. Sean Chu disciplined for physical contact with 16-year-old girl when he was police officer
