Revoke Charitable Status of Private Schools and Impose VAT on Tuition Fees
Revoke Charitable Status of Private Schools and Impose VAT on Tuition Fees
Why this petition matters
Our children's schools are in a state of disrepair, the meals they receive are substandard, and their teachers are under immense pressure. Meanwhile, the wealthiest in our society can afford to secure a brighter future for their children at the expense of ours. This is not just about education; it's about equality and justice.
We propose that private schools should no longer be granted charitable status, which currently allows them to avoid paying certain taxes. Furthermore, we suggest imposing Value Added Tax (VAT) on private school tuition and boarding fees. The revenue generated from these changes could significantly improve the condition of state schools.
According to a report by UCL Institute of Education (2018), private schools in England save up to £522m a year due to their charitable status while contributing only 6-7% towards total school enrolments nationwide. This imbalance needs rectification.
The additional funds raised through these measures could be invested into our state schools - improving infrastructure, providing better meals for students, reducing teacher workload and ultimately enhancing the quality of education for all children irrespective of their socio-economic background.
It's time we levelled the playing field so that every child gets an equal opportunity at success. Please sign this petition if you believe in fair access to quality education for all our children.
