Why this petition matters

Started by Tord Björk

Boris Kagarlitsky was arrested in Moscow on July 25, 2023 after being accused by the Russian security service FSB of "justifying terrorism".

Boris Kagarlitsky has been taken to Syktyvkar, the center of the Komi republic in the northeastern European part of Russia. Here the criminal case against him has been opened by the regional department of the FSB. According to information in the press, he is threatened with seven years imprisonment.

Kagarlitsky is a worldwide renown sociologist and peace activist. He was accused and imprisoned already in the times of the Soviet Union as well as in Russia in the time of Yeltsin's presidency. Kagarlitsky has played a central role in peoples  movements internationally, including as a speaker at European Nuclear Disarmament meetings already during the Soviet era. In recent years he also participated at international No to NATO meetings and at meetings for global justice. Through his work Kagarlitsky has contributed to nuclear disarmament and agreements of importance for world peace.

The charge of "justifying terrorism," when raised against one of the most outspoken advocates for cooperation between all social movements and all people in East and West, South and North, is undermining common efforts for world peace.

We call on the Russian authorities to drop their charges and release Boris Kagarlitsky!
