We, the undersigned, hereby petition the U.S. Department of State to address the significant delays in visa processing for Iranian students seeking to study in the United States.

Recent data published by the U.S. Department of State has revealed a concerning trend: a notable decline in the issuance of student and researcher visas (F and J visas) for Iranian applicants between August 2023 and January 2024. This decline has left approximately 700 Iranian students stranded in the clearance process for an average of 12 months, jeopardizing their academic and professional aspirations.

The prolonged delays in visa processing not only disrupt the educational journeys of Iranian students but also undermine the principles of academic freedom and international exchange that are fundamental to the U.S. higher education system. Iranian students contribute invaluable perspectives, knowledge, and talent to academic institutions across the country, enriching the educational experience for all.

We respectfully urge the U.S. Department of State to take immediate action to address this issue by:

Recognizing the adverse impact of visa processing delays on Iranian students and the broader academic community.

Implementing transparent and expedited procedures for visa applications, ensuring that Iranian students can pursue their studies without undue delay or uncertainty.

By prioritizing the timely processing of visas for Iranian students, the U.S. Department of State can demonstrate its commitment to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for international students and scholars.
