We would like to see Act 328 of the Michigan Penal Code 750.14 removed. This Act states this” Administering drugs, etc., with intent to procure miscarriage—Any person who shall willfully administer to any pregnant woman any medicine, drug, substance or thing whatever, or shall employ any instrument or other means whatever, with intent thereby to procure the miscarriage of any such woman, unless the same shall have been necessary to preserve the life of such woman, shall be guilty of a felony, and in case the death of such pregnant woman be thereby produced, the offense shall be deemed manslaughter. In any prosecution under this section, it shall not be necessary for the prosecution to prove that no such necessity existed. "In layman's terms abortion will be illegal except for in the case that the mother's life is in jeopardy. By eliminating this act, it would assure that the women of Michigan have access to safe accessible healthcare.  
 Recent events, such as the ones in Texas and Mississippi, are trying to outlaw abortion. The Texas law that they are trying to implement bans any person "from providing an abortion‑inducing drug to a pregnant woman without satisfying the applicable informed consent requirements for abortions," which includes providing the drugs to women seven weeks into a pregnancy. 50% of women have no pregnancy symptoms until the 6th or 7th week of pregnancy. This law in Texas also gives any person the grounds to sue anyone who receives an abortion or “knowingly engages in conduct that aids or abets the performance or inducement of an abortion.” Which will then create a manhunt. Not only do the women in Texas have to worry about getting an abortion in unsafe conditions because they do not have access to a safe abortion, but they also must worry about her neighbors, cab driver, or jealous ex-boyfriend turning her in because with this law it is in their rights to do so. The Mississippi law that they are trying to implement bans abortion after 15 weeks (about 3 and a half months) of pregnancy. Mississippi is urging the Supreme Court to overturn Roe Vs. Wade. If Roe Vs. Wade gets overturned Act 328 of the Michigan Penal Code 750.14 will be in full affect and Michigan women will not be able to access the medical care required to receive a safe abortion.This is proof that we need to remove this Act to protect the women of Michigan. This law, if Roe vs. Wade gets overturned, will negatively affect our mothers, sisters, aunts, cousins, and female friends in a way that they might never recover. This law not only affects women but any person that has a woman in your life that you care about. 
  If abortion becomes illegal our already strained foster care system will be overrun and more children will be neglected. The annual estimate of children that die due to abuse and neglect was 1,840 in 2019. 9.4% of children in the foster care system suffer from physical neglect and abuse and 4% suffer from sexual abuse and other maltreatment. These are just the reported cases. Statistics prove that if the number of children in the foster care system go up the number of children dying from abuse and neglect would also go up. Removing this law would avert mental health crises in the women being prevented from accessing basic, safe healthcare as well as the children being born in unsafe or unstable situations. Drug addiction rates would sky-rocket due to the mental health patients that would go untreated because of the neglect that would increase because of rape victims or already mentally unstable women being forced to give birth and keep the children or give them up to a foster system that creates more mentally unstable humans. Not to mention the deaths that would increase because women in desperate need of an abortion would be forced to turn to unsafe back-alley clinics to get medical services that should be allowed in a free country. 
Banning abortion will not stop women from getting abortions, it will only force them to turn to unsafe means to receive one. I hope that Michigan can be a state that takes a stance to protect not only the women in our lives rights but also be willing to be a trendsetter in putting women’s physical and mental health before values that have no regard for the well-being of our friends and family.
