À la mairesse et aux membres du conseil municipal de Gatineau :

Nous recueillons ces signatures pour signaler nos préoccupations concernant le projet immobilier en cours de construction sur le corridor vert Champlain à Gatineau. Ce corridor écologique offre un habitat essentiel pour la faune et sert de passage stratégique en connectant le parc de la Gatineau à la rivière des Outaouais, comme on peut l’observer sur la carte ci-dessous. 

Le promoteur Brigil est en train d’y construire un grand complexe résidentiel, appelé Village Champlain. Cette zone inclut des types d’habitats diversifiés et d’une grande importance, où se retrouvent plusieurs plantes à statut particulier. De plus, 30 espèces à statut précaire le fréquentent probablement, et il abrite des populations d’arbres centenaires et de multiples milieux humides.

Selon une étude de connectivité menée par l’Université de Québec en Outaouais (UQO), « on observe une incompatibilité flagrante de fonctions entre la vision de corridor vert de circulation faunique […] et le développement immobilier actuel sur le site ». Il y a également un écart problématique concernant le nombre et la taille des milieux humides répertoriés par Brigil et par la Ville de Gatineau.

Bien que nous comprenions la nécessité du développement économique, nous notons avec inquiétude que ce projet, sous sa forme actuelle, aura « un impact important et significatif sur l’écologie et la connectivité du territoire ».[1]

Nous demandons à la mairesse et aux membres du conseil municipal de Gatineau de respecter ses engagements en matière de lutte contre les changements climatiques et de protection de l’environnement en prenant les mesures suivantes :

1.     Protéger la connectivité du corridor en exigeant une distance minimale de 200 mètres à l’ouest.

2.     Faire répertorier les zones humides par un expert indépendant et communiquer les résultats au public.

3.     Créer des passages fauniques sécuritaires sur les deux axes routiers (boulevard de Lucerne et chemin d’Aylmer) par la signalisation et la réduction de la vitesse.

4.     Modifier la réglementation municipale pour que toutes les études environnementales soient accessibles aux citoyens.

5.     Répertorier et zoner tous les corridors verts sur le territoire de Gatineau et les protéger à 100 %.

Unissons nos forces pour protéger le patrimoine naturel de notre ville en modifiant le projet immobilier proposé et en exigeant la mise en œuvre d’un développement véritablement durable et responsable à Gatineau.

Protect the Champlain Green Corridor and Biodiversity in Gatineau

To the mayor of Gatineau and members of the municipal council:

We collect these signatures to demonstrate our concerns regarding the ongoing development project on the Champlain Green Corridor in Gatineau. This ecological corridor provides essential habitat for wildlife and serves as a strategic passageway by connecting Gatineau Park to the Ottawa River, as shown on the map provided above.

The developer Brigil is currently building a large residential complex called Village Champlain in this area. This zone contains a wide range of habitats, allowing several at-risk plants species to flourish. Over 30 species of different animals rely upon the corridor to travel between ecosystems, some of which include key wetland environments and century-old trees that are irreplaceable.

A connectivity study conducted at the University of Quebec in Outaouais (UQO) concluded that “there is a blatant incompatibility of functions between the vision of the green wildlife corridor… and the current real estate development on the site. .”[1] There is also a discrepancy between Brigil and the City of Gatineau in relation to the number and size of wetlands in the area.

While we recognize the need for economic development, we are concerned this project, in its current form, will have “a significant and important impact on the ecology and connectivity of the territory.”[1]

It is not too late to modify the remaining phases of this project. We urge the mayor and members of the municipal council, to uphold their commitments to fight against climate change and protect the environment by taking the following actions:

1.     Protecting the connectivity of the corridor by preserving a minimum distance of 200 metres to the west.

2.     Identifying all wetlands independently and publicizing the results.

3.     Creating safe wildlife crossings on both road axes (Boulevard Lucerne and Chemin Aylmer) through signage and speed reduction.

4.     Amending regulations to make environmental studies related to construction publicly available. 

5.     Identifying all green corridors in the Gatineau area and protecting them from development

Let us make a point to protect our natural heritage by modifying the proposed real estate project and demanding the implementation of sustainable development in Gatineau.
