A Pro-Human Approach to Colorado State Social Studies Standards
A Pro-Human Approach to Colorado State Social Studies Standards
Why this petition matters
The Foundation Against Intolerance and Racism (FAIR) is a nonpartisan organization dedicated to advancing civil rights and liberties for all Americans, and promoting a common culture based on fairness, understanding and humanity.
FAIR promotes compassionate opposition to intolerance and racism rooted in dignity and our common humanity. As such, FAIR Colorado is encouraging all Colorado residents to review the state’s proposed changes to Colorado’s K-12 social studies standards and sign on to our petition before the February 1st deadline.
All school districts, including charter schools, must operate within and teach to these state history and civics standards. Given this impact to our kids and community, we believe it is imperative to improve the current draft of these standards.
FAIR Colorado Stands for:
- Teaching students America’s full history, not only focusing on our flaws but also on how our founding principles have led to unprecedented flourishing for people across demographics.
- Motivating students to know that in our shared humanity, we are individuals with self-determination. We do not condone dividing students into stereotyped identity groups based on immutable characteristics.
- Encouraging students to be informed, engaged citizens, but not pressuring them to be activists for specific causes.
FAIR Colorado believes that in each of these principles, the proposed social studies standards fall short. FAIR HQ has submitted a letter to the Review and Revision Committee with the Colorado State Board of Education to outline the concerns.
By signing onto FAIR Colorado's petition, you are standing behind the letter that FAIR HQ is submitting. Help us make sure that the next generation of Colorado students is taught America's full history in a pro-human way that unites and lifts them up to be engaged and informed citizens.
Thank you!
