Why this petition matters

Started by Chloe Levere

According to the Canadian Federal Government, in agreement with the United Nations General Assembly, access to water and sanitation is a fundamental human right. To date, these rights are not being upheld and are disproportionately affecting Indigenous communities in Canada. This petition is meant to specifically advocate for North Caribou Lake First Nation's (Weagamow First Nation) right to clean drinking water. This is a call to action to Dan Reynard (the mayor of Kenora), Ontario's Ministry of Indigenous Affairs, and Indigenous Services Canada to be proactive about this crisis now.

The water crisis in Canada comprises issues of both environmental racism and environmental degradation. Governmental neglect of Indigenous communities continues to be an unfortunate reality. The Government of Canada made a commitment to lift all long-term drinking water advisories in Indigenous reserves and communities by March 2021. It is currently seven months past the deadline and this promise has been broken. Currently, 45 long-term drinking water advisories remain in place in 32 reserves.

North Caribou Lake First Nation has dealt with environmental racism and governmental neglect for decades. Currently, the community has been on a long-term drinking water advisory for over a year. In all this time, the government has not gotten past the first feasibility phase in finding a solution to this serious issue. This negligence is unacceptable and drastically affects the health, emotions, and quality of life of each individual living there.

It would be greatly appreciated if you took the time to sign this petition, share it with as many people as you can, and advocate for your fellow Canadians' right to clean drinking water. This basic human need should be afforded to every individual on the planet.
